december 2002

Two weeks spent at Christmas working solidly on the house. I wish I could say it was pleasant! At least, despite the freezing cold evenings and occasional rain, the roof showed no signs of further leaking and the daytime temperature was 15 - 20°.

We achieved a lot, including laying a new floor over the slope of the existing kitchen floor - now we don't walk uphill every time we walk across the kitchen. The new floor is 3/4 wood and (currently) 1/4 cement (in front of the sink area). This part will be overlayed with original tiles salvaged from one of the upstairs rooms. We also installed the new kitchen cabinets in stainless steel/aluminium and glass, beech worktop and sink.

Elsewhere we installed heaters on the wall in readiness for EDF to uprate the power supply in February (fingers crossed!), installed lights in the first two bedrooms, cleared one of the back rooms and knocked through the mezzanine areas of the indoor garden.

Finally, we finished laying the cement floor in the dining room in preparation for tiling it - in total we used 24 bags of cement (960 kgs).
