Finally, we completed the purchase process for Normandy and now own two French properties. Getting right down to work, we stripped the laminate wood-effect flooring that was bulging and poorly laid from the floor in the kitchen. On doing this, we found that the underfloor was extremely damp. We broke through a section of this and found a large pit under the floor where the water services had been laid.

As the underfloor was in poor condition, we broke out and relaid a subfloor, checking the membrane for damage.

We also removed most of the kitchen cabinets, which were stud frameworks onto which plasterboard had been nailed and painted. The only solid part of this construction were the MDF doors that had been made. It did not concern us as we intended to modernise the kitchen in any case.
